How To Troubleshoot Magnetron

Magnetron is designed to generate microwaves. The physics of the magnetron is quite complicated. It is using strong external magnetic field to direct the flow of electrons in a resonant circular cavity developing tens and hundreds of watts at frequencies around 2.45 GHz. Magnetron can be tested on continuity only. The volume resistance of the terminals should be less than 1Ω. The insulation resistance between the two terminals and the housing should be infinite.

It may also be possible to detect faulty magnetron when it starts making loud humming noises. A magnetron with a short between the filament (cathode and anode) is likely to cause a loud hum when the cook cycle is initiated. Evidence of arcing (burned spots around ventilation holes in base or a burnt odor) usually indicates a bad magnetron as well. Melting or other damage to the antenna might be the result of arcing due to problems in the oven cavity or waveguide, perhaps operating microwave oven with nothing inside the oven.

    Miele Cooktop Error FE31

    Miele Cooktop Error FE31 indicates the problem with power supply. Check if the incoming power supply cable is connected to the unit properly. Follow the installation manual.

    Error FE31

    • Symptom: The cooktop control switches off. A beep sounds for 3 seconds every 30 seconds, and an FE31 flashes in the display. 
    • Possible causes:
    1. Live (phase) conductor L 2 not available.
    2. Neutral conductor N for right power electronic not available (bridge fault between terminals 4 and 5).
    3. Electronic fault.
    • Solution:
    1. Check the supply connection.
    2. Check that the bridge is present between terminals 4 and 5 and has good contact.
    3. Check the power electronic (side where FE is displayed) and replace it if necessary. Check the filter/control electronic (2N1) and replace it if necessary.

    • Solution: Clear the control area.

    Whirlpool Recalls Glass Cooktops.  The corporation conducting a voluntary recall of 24”, 30”, and 36” electric radiant cooktops that have touch controls with a glass cooktop surface and were sold under the KitchenAid, Whirlpool and JennAir brands. . 

    This decision was made following recent customer reports of cooktop surface elements turning on by themselves, posing a potential fire and burn hazard. This recall involves cooktops that were manufactured from December 2016 through July 9, 2019.     Thermador Range Error Code 43

    Thermador Range Error Code 43 may occur on Thermador Pro ranges if an incorrect accessory backsplash has been installed.  It may also occur if the sail switch is not positioned correctly. 

    • Possible Cause:
    1. The vents on the backsplash must be positioned directly behind the cooling fans. If the vents are not properly aligned with the fans, insufficient airflow may cause the fan to shut down and a code 43 will result.
    2. When the fan is off, the sail switch should be in the open position, and when the fan is on, the switch should be in the closed position. However, if the sail switch is mounted to the fan housing at a downward angle, and the sail is pulled further downward by the airflow of the fan, there may not be sufficient force to return the sail to its starting position (switch open) when the oven is turned off. If the switch is left in the closed position, a fault code 43 will result the next time the oven is used.All Pro ranges built prior to September 2007 (prior to FD 8709) were built with a sail switch and may be affected (see page 2 for a list of models).
    • Solution: To resolve the issue, reposition the sail switch mounting plate so that it is parallel to the bottom of the cooling fan housing. `
    1. Remove two screws which are securing the switch mounting plate to cooling fan housing.
    2. Reposition mounting plate on fan housing so that right screw hole on plate is aligned with center screw hole on right edge of fan housing.
    3. Reattach switch mounting plate to fan housing using one of the original screws. Bottom of switch mounting plate must be parallel to bottom of fan housing.
    4. Carefully drill a new hole in fan housing by using left mounting plate screw hole as a guide.
      Do not let metal shavings fall into electrical components
    5. Insert remaining screw to fully secure the switch mounting plate in the new position.
